Australia's Women's Cricket Team: New Leadership, New Era (2026)

Tahlia McGrath is excited about a transformative phase for Australia’s cricket team, particularly as they gear up to challenge the newly crowned world champions, India, in an eagerly anticipated multi-format series this month.

In the wake of Alyssa Healy's retirement, McGrath will take on the role of vice-captain alongside Ashleigh Gardner, who steps in as co-deputy to new captain Sophie Molineux. This leadership trio faces their first test together with three T20 internationals against India, commencing at the Sydney Cricket Ground this Sunday. This series not only marks their return to international play since their ODI World Cup semi-final defeat to India last October but serves as an important evaluation of Australia's performance in the T20 format leading into a World Cup year.

McGrath was among the candidates considered to succeed Healy but ultimately expressed her enthusiasm for supporting Molineux as she embarks on this leadership journey. "I’ve had the privilege of captaining my country 15 times, which has been an incredible experience, and I certainly threw my hat in the ring for the full-time role," McGrath shared. "However, I’m genuinely thrilled for Sophie and am eager to assist her in any way possible. I’m looking forward to collaborating with her and Ash to achieve great things—hopefully, we’ll be celebrating more victories and lifting trophies for Australia again soon."

With big tournaments on the horizon, McGrath is confident that Molineux will excel in her new position. "We’ve showcased some impressive cricket recently, and we have significant competitions coming up. I believe Sophie is going to do an exceptional job, and I’m here to provide her with all the support I can."

As the Australian squad prepares to face Harmanpreet Kaur's formidable Indian team, McGrath acknowledges the tough challenge ahead. The Indian team arrived in Sydney and has begun preparations for an exhibition match against the Governor-General's XI at North Sydney Oval before the series kicks off. "Multi-format series are the ultimate test, demanding adaptability across different formats," she noted. "India is a world-class team, coming off strong performances from the World Cup. For us, it’s the first time we’ve gathered as a squad in a while, and this series is our only home opportunity this summer. We’re genuinely looking forward to it; it promises to be high-quality cricket."

Reflecting on her own recent form, McGrath is hopeful after performing well in several domestic 50-over matches for South Australia earlier this year. She recently scored 58 and 43 not out in consecutive victories against Victoria and also took 3 wickets for 48 runs. Additionally, she contributed a solid 47 runs against Western Australia in January. "It felt great to return to play for South Australia, help the team secure wins, and contribute personally as well. It was excellent preparation for me," McGrath stated.
