Berlin's Hidden MTB Paradise
Berlin, the bustling metropolis, may not be the first destination that springs to mind for mountain bikers seeking thrilling trails. But, as I recently discovered, this vibrant city has a surprising secret: a thriving mountain bike scene nestled within its urban landscape.
The Adventure Begins
My journey started with a visit from my dear friend Micayla Gatto, a talented rider from British Columbia. Together, we embarked on an exploration of Berlin's lesser-known MTB trails, guided by the legendary Timo Pritzel.
Grunewald: A Woodland Escape
Grunewald, a vast forest in Berlin's west, offers a serene escape from the city's hustle and bustle. With its network of paths and fun MTB trails, it's a hidden gem for outdoor enthusiasts. The Teufelsberg, an artificial mountain with a rich historical past, stands tall at 120.1m. This unique spot has become a haven for bikers, offering flowing lines and challenging jumps. Timo's aerial maneuvers left us in awe, and the Teufelsberg Street Art Gallery, hidden within the ruins, added an unexpected artistic touch.
Havelberg: Nature's Surprise
A short ride away, Havelberg revealed its charm. We pedaled uphill, discovering numerous trail entrances and Timo's beloved oak tree, a meditation spot with a rich history. The area's well-built trails, with step-downs, step-ups, and banked turns, provided the perfect playground for honing our skills. Timo's recommendation of XC tours connecting the Grunewald trails further piqued my interest, offering a glimpse into the diverse MTB community.
Mellowpark: A Youthful Haven
Mellowpark, a 60,000 m² skate park, is a testament to Berlin's commitment to youth culture. Founded in 1999, it has hosted international sports competitions and attracted renowned athletes. The BMX track, adorned with paint and graffiti, was a highlight for me. Meeting riders training for the German Championships brought back memories of my youth, emphasizing the importance of such spaces for personal growth.
Dirt Jump Spots: Community Spirit
Timo's insight into Berlin's dirt jump spots revealed a thriving community. The Strawberry Trails in Frohnau and the MotoX track in Schenkenhorst are hubs for BMX riders and mountain bikers alike. These spots, often developed and maintained by passionate locals, foster a sense of camaraderie and creativity. The presence of youth development programs and political support highlights the positive impact of these spaces on the community.
