Connor Bedard's Unfair Self-Blame: Blackhawks Star's Dominance Overshadowed by Team's Struggles (2026)

A Star's Self-Blame: Connor Bedard's Post-Loss Reflections

A Tale of Unfair Self-Criticism

Connor Bedard, the shining star of the Chicago Blackhawks, has taken an unfair share of the blame for his team's recent loss to the Nashville Predators. But here's the twist: he shouldn't be carrying this burden alone.

The Blackhawks, currently ranked 29th, have found their savior in Bedard, the 2023 first overall draft pick. In Thursday's road game, Bedard showcased his dominance, despite the 4-2 defeat.

It's not Bedard's fault that his teammates frequently make costly turnovers. Yet, as a star player, it's an uphill battle to win under such circumstances.

The Frustration of a Star

Bedard, one of Chicago's goal scorers that night, expressed his frustration post-game. While it's understandable for the organization to want him to stay positive, his growth as a player is undeniable, addressing their primary need for this season.

During the post-game media conference, Bedard, known for his humility, took a lot of the blame. He praised his linemates, [Burkakovsky] and [Greene], for their performance, but the reality is that Bedard was the driving force behind their success.

A Critical Self-Assessment

"I thought [Burkakovsky] and [Greene] were exceptional tonight, as they have been all season, making it easy for me," Bedard said. "They set me up with five or six Grade-A chances. It's on me to convert one more, and maybe the outcome would have been different."

While Ryan Greene has impressed as a solid third piece on the top-six line this season, he's unlikely to be a top scorer in the future. Greene's energy and work ethic will ensure a long NHL career, but elite scoring isn't in his future.

Andre Burakovsky started the 2025-26 season strongly but slowed down in January. One of the main criticisms of head coach Jeff Blashill is his loyalty to keeping Burakovsky on the top line.

Bedard gave credit to his linemates, but it was his playmaking and dominance that made them shine. He created those Grade-A scoring chances for himself.

The Drive for Perfection

Interestingly, Bedard did score a goal in the game, with Greene assisting, but it wasn't enough for him. Bedard is a star with an insatiable appetite for goals and plays. While he might not achieve this every shift, his ambition will make him a consistent point-scorer throughout his career.

Bedard is right; one more goal could have changed the outcome. Nashville's third-period goal at 16:44 stood as the game-winner, but Bedard shouldn't shoulder all the blame, especially when he was their most dominant player and scored a goal.

This goal, his 24th of the season, set a new career high. Based on his goal-per-game rate, he's on pace for 36 goals if he plays every game for the remainder of the season. He has an outside chance at 40 goals, which he likely would have achieved had he not injured his shoulder in December.

Despite this, he'll finish with an impressive total, a confidence boost heading into the summer.

And this is the part most people miss: the impact of a star's self-reflection on their team's future. What do you think? Is Bedard being too hard on himself, or is this self-criticism a sign of a true champion? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
