A Founding Pillar Departs: Unity Loses a Visionary Leader After Two Decades!
It's a significant moment for the gaming industry as David Helgason, the visionary co-founder and former CEO of Unity, has officially stepped down from the company's board of directors. This marks the end of an era for a leader who has been instrumental in shaping one of the world's most dominant game development platforms for over 20 years. Helgason, alongside his co-founders Nicholas Francis and Joachim Ante, championed the mission to democratize game development, a goal that propelled Unity to become a ubiquitous tool for creators globally.
While Helgason transitioned from his CEO role in 2014, his continued presence on the board has been a source of guidance and strategic insight. His departure, effective immediately, signifies a new chapter for the company.
But here's where it gets a bit complex... The board isn't just saying goodbye to Helgason. Tomer Bar-Zee, the co-founder and former CEO of IronSource, who joined Unity after its acquisition in 2022, is also exiting the board. Both Helgason and Bar-Zee resigned on February 5th, 2026. Adding to the board's transition, Mary Schmidt Campbell's term is concluding at the 2026 annual stockholders' meeting, and Mark Barrysmith, Unity's chief accounting officer, is set to retire on June 15th, 2026. These departures collectively reduce the board's membership to nine.
Unity CEO Matt Bromberg expressed his gratitude, stating, "David and Tomer have been vital partners as we’ve grown and transformed Unity." He added, "They welcomed me into the company, shared their unique vision as founders, and have provided unfailing support. I’m looking forward to many more years of conversation with both of them." Similarly, Unity Chairman Jim Whitehurst lauded their "partnership and invaluable contributions to the company’s evolution," wishing them "every success in their future endeavours."
And this is the part most people miss... While seasoned leaders depart, a familiar face is returning to the games industry's leadership scene. Bernard Kim, formerly the president of publishing at Zynga and CEO of Match Group, is joining Unity's board as an independent director starting May 1st, 2026. His term is set to run until 2027, and he will also serve on the board’s nominating corporate governance committee.
Whitehurst highlighted Kim's extensive experience, noting, "Bernard brings deep experience building and scaling global, public companies at the intersection of games and technology. His leadership across mobile gaming, advertising technology, and consumer platforms will be a valuable addition to the Unity board.”
Kim himself shared his enthusiasm, commenting, “Unity plays a foundational role in how interactive experiences are created, distributed and scaled. I’ve long admired the company’s impact on the industry, and I’m excited to work with the Board and leadership team as Unity accelerates its mission to democratise game development.”
Now, let's talk about what this all means. With such significant changes at the board level, how do you think these transitions will impact Unity's future direction and its commitment to its core mission of democratizing game development? Do you believe the influx of new leadership, particularly with Bernard Kim's background, will usher in a new era of innovation, or could it signal a shift away from the company's foundational principles? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below – do you agree with the sentiment of gratitude, or do you see these changes as a sign of deeper strategic shifts? Let us know!
